While statins remain the new Magic bullet when it comes to lowering your cholesterol, why not implement some lifestyle changes as well that might get you off the statins at some point?

There is no secret as to what causes high cholesterol and while there is still debate amongst the medical community as to just what exactly constitutes high or even bad cholesterol levels we do know that your cholesterol levels should be watched.

Cholesterol works within the body as a sort of oil if you will that keeps the body running smoothly. When cholesterol builds up in the arteries it can and does cause blockages that can and will cause a heart attack.

While some physicians want to see the populace at large on statins I think it’s a better idea that we all step back and take a good look at our lifestyles. American eat way too many sugars, fats and a host of other things that in small quantities occasionally won’t be a problem, unfortunately we are bingers who consume fast food, junk food and zero gain food on a regular basis.

While there are certain factors such as genetics at play that you really can’t do much about there are a host of other things that you can change and in doing so will lower your cholesterol and make you a healthier person.

Cut out the sodas: Sodas are empty calories filled with everything bad for your body.

Exercise: You don’t have to be a champion body builder but it’s a proven fact that just walking 30 minutes a day can and will help you to reduce cholesterol levels.

Eat a healthier diet: Forgo the cheeseburger and start adding foods that are rich in omega 3 fatty acids to your meal plans. These include fruits, grains, vegetables and fatty fish.This will help reduce your total cholesterol.

Sounds simple doesn’t it? High cholesterol doesn’t need to be a life sentence on statins. Start making these changes today and watch your cholesterol come into line.
